Central City, founded in 1859 by miners, was once known as the “Richest Square Mile on Earth” due to the gold rush. With the integral role Central City played in Colorado’s mining history, there is a remarkable preservation of local buildings.

In 1961, it was named a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The Central City Opera, founded in 1932, maintains 27 Victorian-era properties.
