    Gilpin County Arts Association launches the 77th Annual Juried Art Show with an opening reception and awards. The show provides a showcase for nearly 100 of the nation’s top artists displaying an incredible variety of mediums. The 77th Annual Juried Art Show runs through August 9, 2024.

    In the mid-1800’s, Madam Lou Bunch opened a brothel for the many miners looking to find gold in what was dubbed “The Richest Square Mile on Earth”. With a tuberculosis breakout, she helped the sick and is credited with saving the city. In addition to a Main Street Bed Race, this year’s celebration offers even more to include live music, performances by the Infamous Backroom Cabaret and The Wild Bunch, a costume contest, and the Madam & Miners’ Ball as well as special activities for the children.

    The 2024 Summer Festival proudly begins with the Central City Opera being inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame along with Cynthia Lawrence, Keith Miller, and the late John Moriarty. The celebration starts at 5:00PM with the pre-ceremony reception followed by a plated dinner at the historic Teller House with music by Central City Opera apprentice artists, premium seating for the ceremony and VIP tickets to the opening night performance of The Pirates of Penzance.

At the heart of the story is the beloved owner of the Polka Saloon, who finds herself in a complicated love triangle with a newcomer and the local sheriff. Each year, a different cemetery in Gilpin County (there are 11) hosts this event and local history buffs portray those who now call these cemeteries home.     Clara Brown is reportedly the first black woman to cross the plains during the Gold Rush, settling in Central City where she established a laundry. By 1866, she had accumulated $10,000 and began to actively search for her family. In the process she helped newly freed slaves find their home in Colorado. This day celebrates her bold contribution with a parade and experiential activities to serve as a reminder that life in the 19th century had its challenges.
